CHAPTER ELEVEN

Alayna

I believe I’ve exhausted the kids. I know they’ve tired me. I took them to see the latest children’s movie, and we’re now heading to the penthouse to pack up all their things.

Mia falls asleep, so when we arrive at the building, I carry her up. Once she’s had a nap and it’s close to the end of the workday for Damon, we leave to pick him up.

Marshall is relieved of his shift by another gentleman on his security team. I think he’s exhausted, too. The new guy, Cooper, looks to be in his late twenties or early thirties, and as Marshall introduces us, the man flashes me a flirty smile.

His blond hair is cut military short like his boss’s, and sandy-colored eyes stare back at me. He takes the front passenger seat while the rest of us load into the back of the Mercedes.

I have a feeling Damon isn’t going to like this guy. He’s overly territorial around any man who is not at least fifteen years older than me.

Once at Golding, Damon exchanges a few words with him before entering the vehicle.

“Uncle Reed, you have to wear your seat belt,” Mia says.

“Oh, right, sorry.” He buckles, and I lean in to give him a kiss. “Are you two ready to go home?” he asks.

“No, I want to stay at your house again,” she replies, scowling with her bottom lip pushed out.

“You can come back soon. How about you, Rylan? Do you want to come back over?” Damon asks.

“Yeah, it was cool. I’m going to practice chess with my friends so I can get better at it.”

“I’m sure you’ll be a pro in no time.”

Mia shoots up straight in her seat. “Uncle Reed, did you think of me a nickname?”

“I did, actually.”

Her eyes shine brightly and she giggles. “What is it?”

“When I was a little boy, I had all the Curious George books. You remind me of George.”

She drops her hands next to her. “Uncle Reed, I can’t be George. That’s a boy’s name.”

“Hmm ... I guess it is. My friend’s name is George, and he’s a guy. I guess you’ll have to be Georgie then.”

She giggles. “OK, I’ll be Georgie.”

We arrive at Debra and Jeff’s and enter their beautiful home in Greenwich Village. It’s vastly different from the high-rises in Manhattan.

It’s obvious Debra is an artist. There are paintings on every wall, and their home has an eclectic feel with a lot of color. It’s homey and seems like a lovely place to raise children.

She’s an artist and Damon’s a writer, so I’m curious if one of their parents is artistic, too.

“Oh, my goodness, Mia, your hair is up,” Debra says with a shocked expression as she eyes her daughter.

“Do you like my bow, Mommy? Princess Alayna gave me a bunch of pretty ones. I’m going to wear it up every day. Oh, and my name is Georgie now.” Mia takes off running through the house, her abundance of energy leading the way. Damon and I both laugh.
